To start off our year, we will be reading the debut novel by Yegi Y. Ham called The Invisible Hotel on Monday, January 26th. The Invisible Hotel is a gothic, speculative horror novel about Yewon, a young woman stuck in her rural South Korean hometown after losing her job. Haunted by recurring dreams of an endless, ominous hotel filled with infinite rooms and keys, she wakes to a life overshadowed by the lingering trauma of the Korean War. In her village, families keep the decaying bones of ancestors in their bathtubs—symbols of a conflict that never truly ended. Yewon’s brother serves near the North Korean border, her sister faces a devastating crisis, and her mother’s health is failing, leaving the family in perpetual tension and grief. As Yewon’s dream world and reality begin to blur, the hotel reveals deeper truths about generational trauma and the nation’s unresolved past.
