Come to the library and make a colorful paper heart that will become part of a larger art piece showing community support for 2SLGBTQIA+ people in recognition of May 17th.
This event is part of the Coquitlam Public Library’s acknowledgment of May 17, the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT). Welcoming all 2SLGBTQIA+ adults and their allies, this event is a free drop in craft activity making 3D rainbow colored shapes out of paper that will be combined together to create a free form art piece. Drop by to make a few cubes to the piece, a few to take home, and make an impact on our community artwork! The completed sculpture will be displayed in the library and online on our social media accounts. We will be working with glue and scissors, very young children not recommended. Registration not required but the craft may close earlier than listed due to popularity.
The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia was created in 2004 to draw the attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex people and all other people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and sex characteristics. The date of May 17th was specifically chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. Learn more at https://may17.org/
