To celebrate Earth Day, we will be reading Orbital by Samantha Harvey on Monday, April 27th. Winner of the Booker Prize 2024, Orbital follows six astronauts and cosmonauts from around the world during one day aboard a space station on the brink of decommission. As they orbit Earth at staggering speed, the novel captures their routines, fleeting communications with loved ones, and the intimate bonds that protect them from isolation. Through sixteen sunrises and sunsets, they observe the planet’s fragile beauty while reflecting on the lives they’ve left behind. Both epic and intimate, the novel serves as a contemplative elegy to Earth and the environment.

In honour of Mother's Day, we will be reading Mother-Daughter Murder Night by Nina Simon on Monday, May 18th. When a murder occurs next door, it unexpectedly draws a grandmother, mother, and daughter closer together. This lighthearted whodunnit follows the trio as they become amateur sleuths determined to crack the case. Blending family dynamics with mystery, the story highlights their generational differences and shared strengths. Think Gilmore Girls—but with a murder at the center.

For Pride Month in June, we will be reading Fundamentally by Nussaibah Younis. After publishing an article on deradicalization, Nadia Amin, a witty and bighearted PhD, is recruited by the United Nations to lead a rehabilitation program for women affected by extremist ideology in Iraq. Motivated by personal heartbreak and abandonment, she eagerly accepts, only to find herself overwhelmed by bureaucratic chaos and a fractious team that includes the self-righteous Sherri and the aloof Pierre. Things shift when Nadia meets Sara, a sharp-tongued East Londoner radicalized as a teenager, and the two form a deep bond as Nadia becomes determined to help her return home. But when Sara reveals a destabilizing secret, Nadia’s savior complex unravels, forcing her to confront whether she can truly help someone who may not want saving.
