Virtual Book Club
Monday, July 27
7:00pm - 8:00pm
Are you looking for a book club that meets online? Look no further than our Virtual Book Club! We meet monthly on the 4th Monday of each month and we read some fabulous books.
Over the summer month, we will be reading a selection of Canadian authors.
For July, we will be reading Denison Avenue by Christina Wong. Combining ink illustrations with fiction, this book tells the story of Wong Cho Sum, an elderly widow living in Toronto’s rapidly changing Chinatown–Kensington Market neighborhood. After the unexpected death of her husband, Cho Sum begins collecting bottles and cans to occupy her time and cope with her grief and isolation. As she walks through the city, she forms new friendships, faces racism and class prejudice, and gradually learns how to rebuild her life in a community transformed by gentrification that increasingly pushes aside longtime residents like her.
This book is available in regular print and as an ebook and eaudiobook on Libby and Hoopla.
For August, we will be reading Looking for Jane by Heather Marshall. Told in 3 different timelines, this book covers a group of women who operated an illegal underground abortion network in Toronto, known only by its code name of "Jane". A historical book about feminism in Canada, it is sure to be an interesting and informative read.
This book is available in regular print and as an ebook and eaudiobook on Libby.
In September, we will be reading Astra by Cedar Bowers. Born and raised on a remote British Columbia commune, Astra Brine has long struggled to find her way in the world, her life becoming a study of the thin line between dependence and love, need and desire. Over the years, as her path intersects with others--sometimes briefly, but always intensely--she will encounter people who, by turns, want to rescue, control, become, and escape her, revealing difficult yet shining truths about who they are and what they yearn for.
This book is available in regular print.
