Join the Library and SFU in this informative workshop about Algorithmic Bias on Gender.

Join the Library and SFU in this informative workshop about Algorithmic Bias on Gender. This workshop is presented by Cait McKinney, an Assistant Professor at SFU. Who has an interest in queer and trans approaches to future focused technologies.

The internet is now widely considered to amplify bias, misinformation, and harassment. How can we understand these problems, and also think beyond them toward other possible internets?

This workshop will explore this question and more by looking at the following:

  • How trans and queer communities speak back to some of the most challenging aspects of contemporary online technologies: database design, privacy concerns, and content moderation
  • How is gender captured in technological databases
  • How do trans and queer communities offer alternative models for thinking about technical design
  • How do content moderation policies deal with sexual expression online

Registration required. The Library will be offering this program using Zoom.

  • Please register in advance and include your email address in order to attend.
  • The Library will share an invitation to the Zoom meeting via email 24 hours in advance of the session.
  • Please contact the Library if you have not received an email.  We may be unable to email invitations to the Zoom meeting if you register less than 60 minutes before the start of the program.
