an Indigenous Plant Walk
Saturday, June 13
2:00pm - 4:00pm
Branch - City Centre
City Centre Room 127Join the library as we go on a guided tour of a local park to learn about indigenous plants from our host, Deanna Miller.
It's spring and plants are growing! Have you ever wanted to learn more about the local plants that surround us? Join us as we walk to a local park to find and discuss the amazing plant life that grows here. Our guide Deanna will begin the session by introducing herself in her ancestral language and speak to land stewardship and our responsibility to “walk slowly” on this land. She will then lead the plant walk highlighting the local native, medicinal and edible plants that are found in the area.
We will be meeting in room 127 at the City Centre branch library, and then walking to Glen Park. This is a 5-10 minute walk on flat, paved sidewalks. The park section will be unpaved, but still flat, with no elevation gain or difficult terrain. No seating available. This is an outside program, prepare for weather, this program will happen rain or shine. Registration is required.
About Deanna Miller/θə nə šxʷne:m:
Deanna Miller is from Katzie First Nation and was born and raised on Katzie ancestral land in the Langley territory. šxʷne:m is a word in the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language that means healer.
In an effort to return to the ways of her ancestors, she makes medicines from plants she harvests from her land. All products are handmade in small batches with intention, love and
respect. She enjoys all opportunities to share this ancestral knowledge through workshops and plant walks.
